Hello, Fellow Health Warriors!
Today, let's lace up our sneakers and take a stroll through the wonders of walking. Inspired by the Blue Zones and armed with insights from 'Living to 100' on Netflix, I've embarked on a journey of 7,000 steps a day. I have always strength trained 3-4x/week but the magic of walking was missing for me and my daily steps were woefully low.
Join me as we explore the incredible changes I've noticed and the science behind the magic.
Setting the Stage: A Walk into the Blue Zones
Ever wondered why folks in the Blue Zones live longer, healthier lives? A common thread—they move every day, especially by walking, not as a chore but as an integral part of life. In our world of convenience, walking has become a mindful effort, but oh, the rewards!
The Journey Begins: My Women's Walking Group
A month ago, I gathered a group of wonderful women for a Women's Walking Group. Twice a week, we have been embracing the joy of walking. This inspired me to up my average daily step game to a goal of 7,000. Why this specific number? No reason other than it seems to be a good number for my lifestyle and it is definitely keeping me more active than I was!
Change 1: Better Mood, Brighter Days
Physiologically, walking unleashes mood-boosting endorphins, those magical chemicals that turn our steps into a joyous journey. Stress hormones like cortisol take a backseat, and the result? A natural mood lift that stays with you throughout the day. So, when you catch me with a smile after a walk, it's not just the fresh air talking!
Change 2: Craving Control, Snack Drawer Be Gone!
Ever wondered why a brisk walk helps with cravings? It's the physiological magic at play. Walking helps regulate blood sugar levels, preventing the spikes and crashes that lead to those sneaky cravings. Plus, the simple act of walking shifts your focus away from the tempting snack drawer. It's like a double win!
Change 3: Unleashed Energy, No Midday Slump Here
Contrary to what you might think, moving more creates more energy. The secret lies in improved cardiovascular efficiency. When you walk, your heart becomes a superstar, efficiently delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues. The result? Increased vitality and a skip in your step that defies the midday slump.
Change 4: Sharper Mind, A Mental Clarity Boost
Walking isn't just a physical exercise; it's a brain-boosting activity. Regular physical activity, including walking, enhances blood flow to the brain, promoting the growth of new neurons and preserving cognitive function. So, when you see me taking a thoughtful stroll, know that I'm not just enjoying the scenery—I'm giving my brain a workout!
